Born in Salzburg, Austria; lives in Berlin and Linz.
Studied at the Berlin University of the Arts; the head of the department "Sculpture – Transmedial Space" at the University for Art and Industrial Design in Linz since 2008.
Virtual worlds have physical sides – Eva Grubinger questions the physical substance of the symbols of power. She applies herself to the techniques of control within public spaces by designing ambivalent installations dealing with the everyday practice of surveillance. In »Crowd« (2007, fig.), for example, visitors are sent down a course of barrier tapes that are commonly known and used for the regulation of foot traffic at airports. Her work reveals that environments are not just seen but that their viewers are themselves an aspect of the observed. She involves the visitor in a contrasting game of active exploration of known symbols and the increasing uncertainty regarding their functions.
